What is the difference between topsoil and compost?
Topsoil is screened natural soil used for levelling, building up beds and laying lawns, while compost is decomposed organic matter packed with nutrients. The two work best together: structure from the topsoil, feeding power from the compost.
How much topsoil do I need for a new lawn?
Aim for at least 100 to 150mm of good quality topsoil beneath new turf or seed. Measure your area, decide on the depth, and call us on 01202 874207 and we will convert that into bags or a loose load for you.
How thick should I spread mulch?
A layer of around 50mm is the sweet spot. It is thick enough to suppress weeds and lock in moisture, without smothering the crowns of your plants. Keep mulch pulled back slightly from stems and trunks.
When is the best time to mulch?
Spring and autumn are ideal. A spring mulch locks in moisture ahead of summer and keeps weeds down, while an autumn layer insulates roots and improves the soil as it slowly breaks down over winter.

Yes, our soils are sourced locally and screened for quality, which keeps both the product and the delivery miles close to home.
