Sub-Bases, Sand & Cement, Answered
What is Type 1 and when do I need it?
Type 1 Limestone is a crushed aggregate that compacts into a solid, stable sub-base. It sits beneath almost every hard landscaping job: paving, driveways, sheds, artificial grass and gravel areas all rely on it for long-term stability.
How deep should a sub-base be?
As a general guide, allow around 100mm of compacted Type 1 for patios and pedestrian areas, increasing to 150mm or more for driveways and anywhere taking vehicle weight. Compact it thoroughly in layers with a wacker plate.
Sharp sand or building sand, which do I need?
Sharp sand is coarse and free-draining, ideal for bedding paving and screeding under artificial grass. Building sand is finer and softer, which makes it the right choice for bricklaying mortar and pointing.
How much aggregate do I need for my project?
Measure your area and your required depth, then call us on 01202 874207. The team will convert your measurements into bags or advise on a loose load, which is usually the more economical option for bigger jobs.
Do you offer trade prices?
Yes, our whole building aggregates range is priced for trade, with no account needed to benefit. Regular trade customers should speak to the team about volume pricing on larger and repeat orders.
Can I get loose loads delivered?
Yes, loose loads are available for bigger projects at competitive prices. Call 01202 874207 with your quantities and postcode and we will arrange it.
