What is the best laying pattern?
Herringbone gives the strongest interlock for driveways, resisting the turning forces of tyres. The mixed 150mm-wide format also lays handsomely in coursed patterns for paths and patios.
What goes underneath block paving?
A compacted Type 1 sub-base, deeper for driveways than paths, topped with a screeded sharp sand bed. Solid edge restraints around the perimeter keep the blocks locked tight for decades.
Why choose natural stone blocks over concrete?
The colour runs through the whole stone rather than sitting as a surface layer, so wear only reveals more character instead of grey concrete. Limestone also brings a depth of tone that moulded blocks struggle to imitate.
Should a block driveway be sealed?
It is optional, but sealing makes oil and tyre marks far easier to lift, which is a real benefit on parking areas. Use a natural stone sealer such as EasySeal SSP.
