Precautions: This products requires careful handling; we recommend wearing protective gloves and clothing. As this product contains cement which is highly alkaline, skin irritation may occur when in contact. If this product gets into your eyes, wash out immediately with clean water and seek medical attention if irritation persists. This should be used in a well-ventilated area and mixed carefully to avoid too must dust rising.
Step 1 - Preparation
Once you have prepared your mortar base - tips on Laying Paving Slabs can be found here - you should be ready to start priming your paving slabs. Ensure the patio slabs have been cleaned of any dust or debris by simply brushing down or washing with clean water. Ensure you have carried this out for your entire batch of paving slabs before you start priming.
Step 2 - Mixing
Pour 5.95 litres of clean water into a large container. Add UltraScape prem-prime powder slowly and mix for 3 to 5 minutes to create a smooth, lump-free slurry. Your Primer is now ready to use.
Step 3 - Priming
Start to apply your paving primer liberally by using a small paint roller and aim to coat the back of the paving slab with 1-2mm of the primer. Once you're happy that the entire surface area is coated with primer, immediately place your paving slab in place onto the prepared mortar bed. Repeat this process across your paving tiles.
Step 4 - Storage
If you have any of this powdered substance left, you can store this back in its tub, provided there is no water present. You can store this for up to 8 months in a cool, dry place.

Why is Primer so Important for Paving Slabs?
Many Landscapers will use Paving Primer on Porcelain Paving tiles in particular, and some will use it on natural stone paving such as Sandstone Paving and Limestone Paving, as well as Cobble Setts and Block Paving.
We would strongly recommend using Premprime Paving Primer on Porcelain Paving due to their manufactured properties and the lack of 'grip' that these smooth, porcelain tiles typically have.
By priming your Porcelain Paving slabs before you lay them onto your mortar bed, you are providing an agent that will firmly bond the paving slabs to the mortar bed in a way that is sustainable through all weather conditions, along with the footfall your garden patio will experience.
If you don't use a Paving Primer on Porcelain Paving, over time you will notice some movement of your patio slabs and they will essentially 'un-stick' from the mortar bed, which will cause problems down the line which will be hard to rectify.

Primer for Porcelain Paving, Natural Stone & Outdoor Tiles
Using the correct primer is one of the most important steps when installing porcelain paving, natural stone paving, outdoor tiles and other low-absorption landscaping materials. Primer creates a strong bond between the paving slab and the mortar bed, helping to prevent movement, lifting and future installation failures.
At Stone Zone, we stock a range of high-quality paving primers suitable for porcelain paving, sandstone, limestone, granite and concrete paving products. Whether you're a professional landscaper or a homeowner tackling a garden project, using a slurry primer helps achieve a long-lasting installation.
Why Use a Paving Primer?
Paving primers are designed to:
- Improve adhesion between paving slabs and mortar
- Reduce the risk of slabs becoming loose over time
- Help create a stronger and more durable patio
- Improve installation performance on porcelain and low-porosity materials
- Meet best practice installation guidelines
Porcelain paving in particular should always be installed using a suitable slurry primer, as the smooth underside of the slab can make adhesion difficult without one.
Which Primer Do I Need?
The correct primer will depend on the type of paving being installed and the installation method being used. Most porcelain paving installations require a slurry primer applied to the underside of each slab before laying.
If you're unsure which paving primer is best for your project, our team can help recommend the most suitable product based on your paving choice and installation requirements.
