Pine Sleepers
Our Pine Sleepers boast both form and function because not only are they of the highest quality, but they are also supplied at a great value at Stone Zone. These sleepers are popular amongst both our Retail and our Trade customers. We supply them at the standard size of 2.4m x 195mm x 95mm.

These popular sleepers are A-grade and are 100% PEFC certified. As they are treated tanalised, it offers protection against fungi and insects. These are softwood pine timber sleepers and can easily be sawn by hand.

There are many uses for these beautiful sleepers, such as garden borders to plant flowers in, a raised vegetable bed or you can test your creativity by building a sand pit!

Our Railway Pine Sleepers are a natural, soft green colour which fades over time to a beautiful silvery grey.

These FSC Certified Sleepers are untreated and are freshly cut from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified timber, meaning they are sustainably sourced without damaging forest areas.

Pine Sleepers as Raised Beds
A common way Pine Sleepers are used is to build raised plant beds either in your garden or an allotment. Pine Sleepers, more often than not, are easy to manoeuvre and therefore very easy to saw by hand if needed, making them suitable for those wanting to do a quick job in their garden. However, if you want to be even more precise they can always be machine-cut as well.

We think it's a great idea to keep your plants in an elevated plant bed because it reduces the dangers that can occur when they are on the ground - namely, they are significantly less likely to get eaten by slugs. Furthermore, having them raised a few inches above ground level, makes upkeeping a little easier as well because you don't need to invest in a kneeling pad where you're weeding or digging.

Pine Sleepers for Garden Edging
A very popular design for gardens is to have borders adorned with flowers all around the edges or to use them as a divide between two different areas within the garden.

Pine Sleepers are a great option for flower borders on ground level. The light brown shade of the pine adds to the colour palette of your garden and makes the colours of the flower pop. These flower beds are very simple to put together and they are able to hold a whole range of things such as flowers, herbs, shrubs and more. We recommend using Wessex Soils to promote healthy growth or maybe Woodland Mulch to make the edging look attractive.

Whether you have a tiered garden or not, or you are considering having divides within your garden to separate different landscapes, these Sleepers are an effective way to achieve this. Pine Sleepers are an attractive accompaniment with a range of different landscapes such as natural Paving, Porcelain paving ad even Artificial Grass. Furthermore, to enhance the area even further you can consider adding Chippings or Decorative Stones.

Finally, they can also be used to create edging for outdoor paths. If you are considering using Path Chippings within your pathways, then Pine Sleepers will coordinate very well, with the colours complimenting each other for a rustic, classic look.

How to Create a Raised Sleeper Bed
Building your own raised sleeper bed is a simpler DIY project than many people might think, as long as you have all the correct materials and equipment you need, it can be completed by anyone with some DIY experience. As a result of our Sleepers being perfectly rectangular shaped, it makes them easy to construct by attaching them with Hex Head Timber Screws. Follow our helpful guide for all the tips you'll need!

Suggested Equipment

Spade
Scissors
Spirit Level
Drill
Sand Paper
Exterior coach screws
10mm Flat Wood Drill Bit
32mm Flat Wood Drill Bit
17mm Socket and Rachet
Weed fabric
Begin with placing your sleepers where you want the beds to go. Be careful where you decide to place your raised because there are several factors you will need to consider before doing something permanent. If you are considering planting fruits and vegetables, we suggest you pick an area that will get a good amount of sunlight. Sunlight is also something you need to consider for just regular plants and flowers.

After you have chosen the best spot for your beds, keep them there for the moment and use a spade and start digging out the area, remember to include enough space for the sleepers to go in. We suggest that you dig at least 30mm deep into the ground and carefully remove any debris during the process. For extra accuracy, go ahead and use a spirit level to ensure that everything is level.

Furthermore, we strongly advise that you purchase a weed fabric to place at the bottom of the sleeper beds. Now is the best time to install the fabric because you can remove the sleepers and determine how much fabric you will need to cover the area. Go around the fabric and cut out the amount you need plus a little extra and lay it down in the proper place.

Optional but recommended, you can also decide to lay down a porous aggregate to go on top of the weed membrane. This will allow the entire to have good drainage, which means your plants won't get oversoaked and your sleepers will be less likely to start rotting. We recommend you use either Scalpings or Crushed Concrete for an affordable solution, you only need a 10mm layer to cover your weed fabric.

You can now go ahead and put the sleepers back in their original spot. Drill 2 pilot holes into the end of the outer sleeper, and the shorter sleeper. This can be easily achieved if you use a 10mm flat wood drill bit. Once that is done, get a 32mm drill bit to drill ~ 1cm into the wood on top of the 2 holes you drilled earlier. This will enable the screw heads to be recessed. Now you can place the 15xm coach screws into the holes and tighten them carefully with the 17mm socket and ratchet. Now repeat this process on all 4 corners.

Going forward, you have a few options you can take when layering multiple sleepers on top of each other. One option would be to drill pilot holes into each corner of the top tiers that go into the sleepers below and then secure them with coach screws - same as what you did earlier.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on some batten wood - which you can easily find in builder's merchants, you can place them in each order and drill a pilot hole and secure each screw. Both methods are effective and will ensure that your beds won't budge.

To conclude, make sure you remember to use sandpaper and smoothen out the corner edges of the sleepers and any areas that you may seem fit, so the overall look is smooth and polished. When doing this, please take care and wear gloves, dusk masks and goggles because it will not be nice if any of the debris gets in your eyes, now or mouth!

What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
When selecting paving materials for your outdoor spaces, Porcelain and Sandstone offer distinct qualities suited to different preferences and requirements.

Porcelain Paving

Porcelain is a manufactured material designed to replicate the aesthetic of natural stone while delivering superior durability and minimal maintenance. Its production involves vitrification, where pure clays and minerals like quartz are heated to temperatures exceeding 1200°C. This process results in:

Durability: Porcelain slabs are exceptionally strong, resisting scratches, stains, and wear over time.

Non-Porous Surface: Being waterproof and resistant to mold, moss, and frost makes Porcelain ideal for wet climates or areas around pools.

Minimal Maintenance: Unlike natural stone, Porcelain retains its texture and color without sealing, requiring only basic cleaning.

Safety: With an R11 skid rating, Porcelain provides excellent grip even in wet conditions, ensuring safety in high-traffic or family-friendly areas.

Modern Aesthetic: Its refined, sleek appearance works well in contemporary garden designs.

Sandstone Paving

Sandstone, a natural material sourced from quarries (primarily in India), exudes a traditional, rustic charm. Its distinctive riven texture and natural variations make it a popular choice for homeowners seeking a timeless appeal.

Eco-Friendly: Sandstone’s porous nature allows rainwater absorption, aiding in natural drainage and potentially reducing flood risk.

Natural Aging: Over time, Sandstone develops a weathered patina, appealing to those who enjoy a vintage or aged aesthetic.

Maintenance: Regular sealing is needed to preserve its colors and protect against weathering. Without sealing, its hues gradually fade to softer, lighter tones.

Traditional Look: Sandstone’s textured finish and natural variations add warmth and character to outdoor spaces.

Comparative Overview

Both materials bring unique advantages, allowing you to tailor your choice to your lifestyle and outdoor needs.

What Do I Need to Lay Porcelain?

You'll also need a joining compound, such as EasyJoint to fill the gaps between your Porcelain Slabs. We'd also recommend adding Porcelain Primer to the back of the slabs to ensure it stays put for years!

How Many Square Meters Shall I Buy?

If you times the Width by the Length of your new patio, you'll get the Square Meterage needed. We'd always recommend adding 10% for wastage and cuts.
