Setts & Block Paving, Answered

Cobble setts or block paving, which do I need?

Block paving is 50mm thick and built for driveways, walkways and heavy use. Cobble setts are thinner and shine as decorative borders, edging and stepping details rather than as a primary load-bearing surface. Many designs combine the two.

How many setts do I need per square metre?

As a guide, 90 of the 100 x 100mm cobble setts cover approximately one square metre with a 10mm joint, and 100 of the 200 x 50mm slim setts do the same. Call 01202 874207 and we will confirm quantities for your layout.

Can block paving take a car?

Yes. At 50mm thick, our limestone block paving is designed for driveways and other areas with regular vehicle movement, and block overlays are even used to reinforce large trafficked spaces such as car parks.

What laying patterns work best?

Herringbone is the classic for driveways because the interlock resists movement, while brick bond gives a neat, offset finish for patios and paths. Setts also make elegant single or double borders around larger slabs.

How do I lay setts?

Compact a Type 1 sub-base, bed the setts on mortar with a cement slurry bond, and finish the joints with a compound such as EasyJoint Select or a sharp sand and cement mix. A paving cutter tidies any edges.

Do setts and blocks need sealing?

Sealing is optional, but worthwhile in high-risk spots such as under trees, near planting or where BBQ spills are likely. Azpects EasySeal products protect the stone while keeping its natural look.

Can I buy setts individually?

Yes, setts are sold as individual pieces so you can order precisely what your design needs. For larger quantities call 01202 874207 and the team will help.
