What are the different Sand options?
Even though it's not widely known, there are several different types of sand, that are readily available in the Landscaping and Building markets. It is vital to know which type of sand you need for your project as each type has different qualities that may not be useful for certain projects.
As you all know, sand is a natural substance that develops over time from eroded rocks. In order for the material to be labelled as sand, it must be between 0.6m and 2mm in size.
Because of the reasons stated before, and is a sought-after and precious material, even though when we look at beaches it seems as if there's a never-ending quantity, over the years they will eventually run out and we will need to find more sustainable methods of using sand and to find alternate methods.
When sand is supplied and shipped for commercial applications such as landscaping and building, they have to be tested and screened in order to meet particular criteria. The screening has been developed to ensure that no debris and contaminants are present in the sand.
If you take a closer look at Builder's Sand, they most often come in 2 different shades, yellow (similar to what we see at the beach) and orange. The Soft Building Sand is a more yellow shade rather than orange because it does not have the same level of iron as the 'Orange Building Sand' and therefore does not have a deeper colour.
Builders Sand is applicable in a wide range of projects such as bricklaying, or as lining for a pond in your garden. The mixture that can be made with this sand can be used with both bricks and sandstone walling.
Here at Stone Zone we also supply Washed Plastering Sand, ideal for landscaping work; Silver Play Sand, best for sandspits and parks; and Bunker Leisure Sand, best for golf courses and large areas.
PLEASE NOTE: While every effort has been made to ensure our sand is free from contamination; there is always the chance that there may be small pieces of debris present. Please ensure you handle the sand with care when using it.
Supplies for Building and Landscaping
In the realm of landscaping, the importance of a reliable sub-base cannot be overstated. MOT Type 1 proves to be the material of choice for both soft and hard landscaping endeavours. For garden paving projects, Stone Zone recommends the use of MOT Type 1 as a sub-base, ensuring durability and permeability.
The significance of a durable yet permeable sub-base becomes apparent when considering the drainage needs of Natural Stone Paving. The proper installation of MOT Type 1 allows for efficient water drainage, preventing potential floods and ensuring the longevity of the paved surface.
When it comes to driveways, whether adorned with Decorative Stones or Shingle, the selection of an appropriate sub-base is crucial. Stone Zone advocates for a sub-base depth of 50mm, ensuring stability and minimal movement under various loads, be it foot traffic or parked vehicles.
The 20mm Ballast is appropriate for a wide range of landscaping projects. For example, if you are thinking about having a new patio in your garden in a spot where paving has never been laid before, then you want to make sure that, that particular area is prepared properly and is at the correct level. Ballast is useful in these situations because they are ideal for creating a hardy sub-base as the small particles help with filling in holes and gaps.
Moreover, if you want to design an edging around a garden path, Ballast will be useful to you for creating the sub-base emulsion. You will also be able to use the Ballast to create a permeable aggregate layer that is perfect for laying underneath other garden features such as Artificial Grass or Decorative Stones.
