How to Lay Turf
As we have mentioned earlier, it is not difficult or complicated to lay turf in your garden, however, we think it would be best to let a professional landscaper handle them just to ensure that it has been placed properly and securely. Nonetheless, if you are an experienced DIY-er and would like to take on the project, we have created a useful little guide to help you get off on the right foot with laying your turf.
Tools:
Wheel Barrow
Rake
Long Knife
Spade
Scaffolding Planks
Garden Hose
Step 1 – Firstly, you have to remember that when you lay turf, the timings differ depending on the time of year. Upon delivery, you have to roll them out immediately if it's the Spring/Summer season, but you can wait 24 hours before installing during the Autumn/Winter season. Due to there being very little waiting time after delivery, we strongly advise that you have your garden ready and prepared well before the delivery takes place.
Step 2 – Now it's time to prepare the surface upon which the turf will be installed. If you already have an existing lawn in your garden, it will need to be removed. You definitely should avoid laying down fresh turf above old ones. You can do this in two ways, you can hire a turf cutter to cut them into pieces and lift them off, or you can get your hands on some strong weed killer and kill the grass that way.
Step 3 – Once the area has been cleared of all the grass and weeds, you need to sprinkle on some topsoil. For the best result, we suggest you put in enough topsoil to cover a depth of 150mm. For this process, our Wessex® Lawn & Turf Seeding Soil will be the best option for you. This topsoil will help you develop a strong, level foundation for the turf to be laid on.
Step 4 – Now you can go ahead and start levelling the ground. We strongly advise that you take extra care when completing this step as it will give your turf the best chance to flourish. If you are laying turf for the first time you may not notice whether or not the ground is irregular, so we suggest that you gently walk around the area to gauge where the ground is hard and soft – it will give you a good feel of the area that a machine won't. Begin by rotovating the area to disturb the soil; then remove any rocks, stones and debris that you come across; then compact that soil by gently walking over it and once you've covered the entire area, walk over again at right angles to your first directions; use a fork to break down heavily compacted areas; rake over the entire surface to make sure the surface is level; make sure not to use any heavy machines in this area as it will compact the soil too much. We also suggest that you water the soil to a depth of 75mm several days before the turf is delivered to ensure it is in its best state.
Step 5 – Now you can start laying the turf. Lay it along a straight edge and keep as close to it as possible; after the first row, make sure to stagger the rest of the rows, similar to how bricks are laid; gently tap down the turf with the head of a rake or broom so it gets contact with the soil underneath; use seeding soil to fill in any gaps and tap that down gently as well; trim the ends with a knife; finally, use soil to cover the outer edges of the new turf so it stays moist and doesn't dry out.
PLEASE NOTE:
Turf must be rolled out within 24 hours in autumn/winter and immediately upon receipt of your delivery in spring/summer to ensure that it does not overheat. During exceptionally hot weather, we advise taking caution of Turf rolls overheating very quickly. During such circumstances, we cannot be held liable and will not accept returns.
Due to the importance of caring for turf within the timescales detailed above, please carefully consider your delivery date and allow sufficient time for ground preparation before laying your turf.

What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
When selecting paving materials for your outdoor spaces, Porcelain and Sandstone offer distinct qualities suited to different preferences and requirements.
Porcelain Paving
Porcelain is a manufactured material designed to replicate the aesthetic of natural stone while delivering superior durability and minimal maintenance. Its production involves vitrification, where pure clays and minerals like quartz are heated to temperatures exceeding 1200°C. This process results in:
Durability: Porcelain slabs are exceptionally strong, resisting scratches, stains, and wear over time.
Non-Porous Surface: Being waterproof and resistant to mold, moss, and frost makes Porcelain ideal for wet climates or areas around pools.
Minimal Maintenance: Unlike natural stone, Porcelain retains its texture and color without sealing, requiring only basic cleaning.
Safety: With an R11 skid rating, Porcelain provides excellent grip even in wet conditions, ensuring safety in high-traffic or family-friendly areas.
Modern Aesthetic: Its refined, sleek appearance works well in contemporary garden designs.
Sandstone Paving
Sandstone, a natural material sourced from quarries (primarily in India), exudes a traditional, rustic charm. Its distinctive riven texture and natural variations make it a popular choice for homeowners seeking a timeless appeal.
Eco-Friendly: Sandstone’s porous nature allows rainwater absorption, aiding in natural drainage and potentially reducing flood risk.
Natural Aging: Over time, Sandstone develops a weathered patina, appealing to those who enjoy a vintage or aged aesthetic.
Maintenance: Regular sealing is needed to preserve its colors and protect against weathering. Without sealing, its hues gradually fade to softer, lighter tones.
Traditional Look: Sandstone’s textured finish and natural variations add warmth and character to outdoor spaces.
