Things to do in Southampton

Southampton is one of England's most well-known places. Be it for their top-rated university or their famous shipping port. There is no shortage of things to do in Southampton, from family-friendly spaces to bars and clubs perfect for university students and parties. Southampton has a rich history and a sprawling city centre so no matter who you are you will be able to find the perfect activities for you.

Historical Sigh-Seeing in Southampton

The Bargate: A symbol of Southampton since the 12th Century, the Bargate was built during Norman times as part of the fortified walled city and served as the main entrance to old Southampton.

Tudor House: One of Southampton’s most significant historic buildings, Tudor House was constructed in the late 15th Century. It provides visitors with a unique and atmospheric glimpse into the city’s past and the lives of its residents.

Holyrood Church: One of the five original churches serving the old walled town of Southampton, Holyrood Church was bombed during The Blitz in WWII. The preserved ruins now serve as a memorial to the sailors of the Merchant Navy.

The Titanic Engineers’ Memorial: Situated in East Park since 1914, this impressive bronze and granite statue commemorates the brave engineers who perished when the RMS Titanic sank in 1912.

St Michael’s Church: Founded in 1070, St Michael’s Church is the oldest building still in use in Southampton. It features many interesting elements, including a Norman tower, a black marble font, and a sculpture of St Michael by Josefina de Vasconcellos.

Pilgrim Fathers Memorial: While Plymouth is often credited as the Pilgrim Fathers' departure point, they actually set sail from Southampton. This monument, built in 1913, commemorates the Mayflower’s departure from Southampton Quay in 1620.

The Medieval Merchant’s House: This restored late-13th century building, located away from the busy city center, was originally built around 1290 by prosperous merchant John Fortin. It has survived centuries of domestic and commercial use and is open to visitors from 1st April to 30th September on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 4pm.

Southampton Old Cemetery: Located in the heart of Southampton Common, this cemetery is one of England’s earliest municipal cemeteries. Covering almost 30 acres, it includes graves associated with the Titanic, the Battle of Waterloo, and the Indian Mutiny.

The Watergate Ruin: Just steps away from Westquay Shopping Centre, this ruin is a vital part of Southampton’s fortification walls. It provided secure access from the commercial section of the city’s Old Town to Town Quay.

Eling Tide Mill: One of only two remaining operating tide mills in the United Kingdom, Eling Tide Mill has been using tidal power to grind wheat into flour for over 900 years.

Arts & Cultural Activities in Southampton

At the world-class John Hansard Gallery, visitors can explore a stunning array of exhibitions from leading visual artists worldwide. The gallery also offers a range of talks, workshops, and masterclasses led by experts in the art industry.

Southampton also boasts a vibrant music scene, with venues hosting a diverse range of musicians across various genres. Enjoy 90s revival at the Engine Rooms, discover independent artists at The Joiners, or experience rock and pop concerts at St Mary’s Stadium.

Outdoor Activities in Southampton

If you're a true water enthusiast, winter won't deter you. Head to Woodmill Outdoor Activities Centre and explore the water with a variety of paddle crafts. Whether you prefer a canoe, kayak, or even a Katakanu, you can enjoy one of four waterways year-round. Paddle around our private, secluded lake nestled within the Woodmill forest, or, if you're a more seasoned paddler, venture out on the River Itchen and down to The White Swan pub for a beer or two.

Not in the mood for water activities? No problem, head into the woods! Nestled in the woodland, you'll find a range of exciting activities. Children can get their first taste of life off the ground on the Low Ropes course. Planning a school trip? Students can practice their bushcraft skills or tackle some outcome-focused team challenges. Feeling even more adventurous? Sharpen your skills at the archery tent. And if you get lost, don’t worry—our orienteering lessons will help you find your way out in no time.

Children's Activities in Southampton

Ninja Warrior UK Experience

Inspired by the hit UK television show Ninja Warrior, this attraction tests your ninja skills to the limit. Spend an afternoon running, jumping, climbing, and dodging obstacles on a classic course designed with all the features from the TV show. It's the perfect way for kids to burn off excess energy.

Ninja Warrior UK is ideal for older children, as the obstacles are more advanced than those found in typical soft play areas. This makes it perfect for specific age groups, events, and parties. Kids love the challenge of the obstacles and the thrill of being part of an authentic TV show experience.

Monkey Bizness Southampton

Monkey Bizness Southampton is the perfect place for your little ones to let off steam and get their weekly exercise. This large warehouse is packed with a maze of tunnels, slides, cushions, climbing frames, and more. Once they arrive, they'll never want to leave.

Mighty Adventures

Want to turn back time and visit the prehistoric era? Mighty Adventures offers a fun and educational day out for the entire family. Tour the park, encounter iconic giant lizards, and learn their names.

While Jurassic World might be in cinemas, Mighty Adventures lets you experience dinosaurs up close without the fear of them breaking loose. These attractions look and move like the real thing but are fully robotic. Enjoy the driving range, gym, or cafe during your visit.

Jumpin’ Jax

Jumpin’ Jax is a themed venue perfect for birthday parties in Southampton. If you have a special birthday coming up and want to celebrate in style, book a party at Jumpin’ Jax. Whether it’s a Marvel theme or a classic fairytale party, you can create it at Jumpin’ Jax.

Go Ape Southampton

Some little monkeys love to climb through tunnels and swing on ropes in soft play areas, while others prefer the adventure of playing outside in the trees. For these nature-loving kids, Go Ape is the perfect place.

Located in a country park, Go Ape Southampton offers an assortment of treetop challenges and adventures, as well as fun activities like axe throwing. If you have a day off and the weather is good, head to Go Ape for a healthy, unforgettable day of fun.
