How to Build a Stone Wall

Upon receiving your Sandstone Walling, it's crucial to conduct a thorough inspection of each segment and organize them based on size and color for optimal installation.

Establishing a sturdy foundation is paramount for the longevity of your stone wall. Typically, the foundation should be three times wider than the width of your wall. For walls ranging from 650mm to 1500mm in height, a concrete foundation provides ideal support.

To ensure secure placement, dig down to a depth of 300mm, reaching firm soil rather than softer topsoil. Allow the foundation to cure adequately before proceeding with wall construction.

Once the foundation is ready, prepare a mortar mix following the same principles as laying bricks, with a ratio of 1 part cement to 5 or 6 parts building sand. Gradually add water until achieving the desired consistency.

Using string and chalk, mark the installation area before placing the walling segments accordingly. Apply a bed of mortar along the chalk line, accommodating four or five walling pieces at a time. Apply mortar to the ends of each piece to create joints, tapping them securely into place with a rubber mallet and ensuring levelness with a spirit level.

Proceed horizontally until completing the first layer, then continue upward if satisfied with the alignment.
