The Journey of Our Eco-Friendly Topsoil
The development of our most popular Wessex® 10mm Borders & Beds Topsoil does not cause harm to the environment and is done in a sustainable manner. This Topsoil is derived from recycled soils we have procured locally around the Dorset area. All the soil is from unwanted or unused waste provided by Gardeners and Landscapers.
To ensure that the soil is as free of debris as possible, the recycled soil is put through a strict screening process in Dorset. This screening is essential because it makes sure that any large stones, sticks and any remaining debris. Once that is complete, the soil will be submitted for various tests and quality assurances. These tests check a multitude of factors such as particle size, PH levels and temperatures. Once all the tests have been completed and passed, the soil will receive the British Standard 3882 certification.
At the same site, the BS3882 tests are completed, and the PAS 100 Green are added at the same time. The Green Compost is derived from green waste from numerous gardens are outdoor areas that have had trees cut down. Within Dorset County, the recycled green material is chopped up and made into compost using a windrow turner. This compost is then regularly turned for the following 12 weeks so the heat is distributed evenly, which in turn regulates the temperature, distributes moisture and improves the oxygen content.
After the PAS 100 Compost has developed, the soil and the compost are thoroughly mixed together in a large machine, so that they are combined as meticulously as possible. All these processes take place on the same site, which is also where the Stone Zone warehouse is based. Once the product is complete and ready for use, we receive large loads of the soil at our warehouse, ready to be sold in-store and online.
With the soil and peat-free compost being created entirely from recycled materials, with no virgin trees or marsh having been cut away for the production of our soils, it makes this a sustainably sourced product. Also, with this topsoil being screened and mixed all on one site, it lowers the carbon emissions that might have been created if it were to be passed from site to site.
Due to the test and the transfer all taking place in Dorset, the Topsoil has a very little carbon footprint, so you can be reassured that your soil is locally sourced and processed and you are not harming the environment. The entire Wessex® Soils range is peat-free meaning they are good for the environment and good for your garden.

What is Screened Soil?
Stone Zone & Landscaping Centre takes measures to ensure that all the garden soils we supply have undergone a careful screening process for specific particle sizes. The Screening process is a vital step because it makes sure that large pieces of debris are removed from the soil. We want to avoid any large pieces of dirt or glass in the soil which can be harmful if you are handling the soil with your hands. Therefore we gladly take these extra steps to ensure our soil is as pure as possible.
The screening is done by a machine called 'The Soil Screener' but can also be referred to as a 'Scalping Screen'. It is essentially a giant sieve. Our Wessex® soils go through a conveyor belt that has different-sized holes perforated in them to catch the different-sized debris. For the Loam Topsoil, the holes go down to as small as 10mm, meaning anything bigger than 10mm should not go through the sieve. If done properly, we will be left with debris-free soil that is ready for our warehouse.
What is PAS 100 Green Compost?
As our peat-free, green compost is made entirely from recycled green waste, mulched and then composted in windrow tuners, it then undergoes a testing process.
Publicly Available Specification is a widely recognised compost quality standard within the organics recycling sector.
To ensure a high standard of compost, PAS is set by the British Standards Institution which requires producers to establish a top-quality production policy.
This product status is given in recognition of non-hazardous waste that contains biodegradable materials only, making it safe to use in both domestic and commercial settings.
What does BS3882 mean?
The British Standard 3882 certification for topsoil has been specifically created to guarantee a consistent high-performance grade; a standard that has been set by the British Standards Institute. This standard is the revised version of the 1994 original certification.
BS3882 is measured on three factors: Soil Structure and Classification, Free-from Contamination and Fertility. BS3882 topsoil suppliers are also able to provide results of the soil analysis which includes the origin of the soil, the contamination parameters and written confirmation that the soil complies with the standard BS3882:2007.
All of the Stone Zone & Landscaping Centre's soil contains BS3882 Soil for multi-purpose use, ideal for all gardening and landscaping applications.
