Soft Building Sand
This light orange sand is a finer grade, soft sand suitable for bricklaying and pointing slabs when it is mixed with cement and water. This can also be used under pond liners and therefore makes it a perfect material for a wide range of landscaping projects.
Soft Building Sand, can also be identified by other names such as Plasterer's Sand; Mason Sand or Bircklayer's Sand. The Soft Building Sand is finely-graded sand that is classed as soft due to its specific texture. As opposed to other building sand, Soft Building Sand is a lighter shade of orange that is easily identifiable and pleasing to look at.
Soft Builders Sand for Pointing Paving
When mixed with cement and water, the Soft Sand is an effective and affordable jointing material, ideal for bricklaying. Which in turn makes it a great alternative if you want to do some landscaping projects on the cheap. (However, do remember that we also supply EasyJoint and Joint-It products if you are looking for an alternative).
More often than not, Soft Sand is used with natural stone slabs such as Sandstone Paving or Limestone Paving, as mentioned before, because Soft Building Sand combines effectively with water and cement to develop a durable jointing compound and stable base for your paving slabs.

A common way in which the Soft Building Sand is used is to create a steady and secure base for an outdoor swimming pool. As a result, the Soft Building Sand is very affordable and the fact that they are available instantly and are consistent in shape and size makes them ideal to be used as a baselining in the area where the swimming pool will be installed. The best option for laying bricks is sand that is labelled 'Builders Sand'. The reason is that sand naturally has a soft texture. Sharp Sand is not appropriate in this context because it's too 'gritty' to be used for bricklaying and on the other hand, kiln-dried sand is too fine and smooth to be used in bonding. On most occasions, Landscapers will measure out 4 parts of the building sand, along with 1 part of cement and mix that together. This mixture develops into a strong mortar mix that is perfect for bricklaying. But, do keep in mind that the ratio of the sand to the cement may change depending on the type of bricks you are working on. The Soft Building Sand has been labelled 'fine-grade' meaning they are appropriate for landscaping projects such as paving, walling and brickwork. Our Soft Building Sand is available to purchase as small 20kg bags that are perfect for smaller projects. We also stock them in bulk bags that can take, approximately, around 850kg of sand. Even though it's not widely known, there are several different types of sand, that are readily available in the Landscaping and Building markets. It is vital to know which type of sand you need for your project as each type has different qualities that may not be useful for certain projects. As you all know, sand is a natural substance that develops over time from eroded rocks. In order for the material to be labelled as sand, it must be between 0.6m and 2mm in size. Because of the reasons stated before, and is a sought-after and precious material, even though when we look at beaches it seems as if there's a never-ending quantity, over the years they will eventually run out and we will need to find more sustainable methods of using sand and to find alternate methods. When sand is supplied and shipped for commercial applications such as landscaping and building, they have to be tested and screened in order to meet particular criteria. The screening has been developed to ensure that no debris and contaminants are present in the sand. If you take a closer look at Builder's Sand, they most often come in 2 different shades, yellow (similar to what we see at the beach) and orange. The Soft Building Sand is a more yellow shade rather than orange because it does not have the same level of iron as the 'Orange Building Sand' and therefore does not have a deeper colour. Builders Sand is applicable in a wide range of projects such as bricklaying, or as lining for a pond in your garden. The mixture that can be made with this sand can be used with both bricks and sandstone walling. Here at Stone Zone we also supply Washed Plastering Sand, ideal for landscaping work; Silver Play Sand, best for sandspits and parks; and Bunker Leisure Sand, best for golf courses and large areas. PLEASE NOTE: While every effort has been made to ensure our sand is free from contamination; there is always the chance that there may be small pieces of debris present. Please ensure you handle the sand with care when using it. Sample Soil is available in-store, please ask a customer advisor.
