This soil contains more than the required nutrients to be able to aid hardier plants like ericaceous plants and durable shrubs.
Please keep in mind that there are a range of Topsoils within the Wessex® Soils collection. This includes Blended 10mm Loam Topsoil, and Borders & Beds Topsoil.
The Journey of Our Eco-Friendly Topsoil
The creation of our much loved Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil does not contribute to global warming as extra steps are taken to make it as sustainable as possible. This Topsoil is acquired from recycled soils we have gotten locally around the Dorset area. All our soil is from unused or unwanted soil given to us by Gardeners and Landscapers from projects where they have soil left to spare.
To be certain that our soil is as pure as possible, the recycled soil has to go through a thorough screening process right here in Dorset. We take this screening process very seriously and insist upon it because it filters out any large stones, sticks and unwanted debris. After the screening soil is complete, it will be submitted for numerous tests and quality assurances. These tests check a wide range of factors and requirements varying from particle size, PH levels and temperatures. Only after the tests have been completed with a successful result will the Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil receive the British Standard 3882 certification.
The BS3882 test and the PAS 100 Green test take place at the same facility and therefore can occur simultaneously. The Green Compost is a combination of several gardens, parks and outdoor areas that have had their trees cut down. Inside Dorset County, the recycled product is chopped up and made into compost with a windrow turner. Then the compost is proceeded to be turned and mixed for 12 weeks, this is done so that heat is distributed evenly, and as a result of the mixing, the temperature is regulated, moisture is distributed and the oxygen content is improved.
After the PAS 100 Compost has been created, it is mixed thoroughly with the soil using a large machine, this is done so that they are as homogenous as possible. All these tests and steps occur in the same area, which is also where the Stone Zone warehouse is based. After all the tests and mixing are complete, the soil is ready, we receive large loads of the soil at our warehouse, ready to be sold in-store and online.
The Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil and all our compost are developed from recycled materials, where no virgin trees or marsh get destroyed for the sole purpose of being used in our soil production. As a result of th way our soil is developed, they are a sustainable brand of soil. Furthermore, because the Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil was screened and mixed in one area, we save on carbon emissions that may have been increased if they were transported from a different site.
As mentioned before the Wessex® Fruit & Veg Topsoil does not contribute much to their carbon footprint because all the tests and the transfer to our warehouse are all contained within one area. We are able to keep our carbon footprint at a minimum because all our materials are sourced locally within Dorset.

What is Screened Soil?
Stone Zone & Landscaping Centre takes measures to ensure that all the garden soils we supply have undergone a careful screening process for specific particle sizes. The Screening process is a vital step because it makes sure that large pieces of debris are removed from the soil. We want to avoid any large pieces of dirt or glass in the soil which can be harmful if you are handling the soil with your hands. Therefore we gladly take these extra steps to ensure our soil is as pure as possible.
The screening is done by a machine called 'The Soil Screener' but can also be referred to as a 'Scalping Screen'. It is essentially a giant sieve. Our Wessex® soils go through a conveyor belt that has different-sized holes perforated in them to catch the different-sized debris. For the Loam Topsoil, the holes go down to as small as 10mm, meaning anything bigger than 10mm should not go through the sieve. If done properly, we will be left with debris-free soil that is ready for our warehouse.
What is PAS 100 Green Compost?
As our peat-free, green compost is made entirely from recycled green waste, mulched and then composted in windrow tuners, it then undergoes a testing process.
Publicly Available Specification is a widely recognised compost quality standard within the organics recycling sector.
To ensure a high standard of compost, PAS is set by the British Standards Institution which requires producers to establish a top-quality production policy.
This product status is given in recognition of non-hazardous waste that contains biodegradable materials only, making it safe to use in both domestic and commercial settings.
What does BS3882 mean?
The British Standard 3882 certification for topsoil has been specifically created to guarantee that our soil is consistent, and to a good standard; following a strict guideline that has been set by the British Standards Institute. This standard is the revised version of the 1994 original certification.
BS3882 is measured on three factors: Soil Structure and Classification, Free-from Contamination and Fertility. BS3882 topsoil suppliers are also able to provide results of the soil analysis which includes the origin of the soil, the contamination parameters and written confirmation that the soil complies with the standard BS3882:2007.
All of the Stone Zone & Landscaping Centre's soil contains BS3882 Soil for multi-purpose use, ideal for all gardening and landscaping applications.
