Wessex Dutch Tree Sand
Often referred to as ‘Amsterdam Tree Sand’ our Wessex Dutch Tree Sand is a Stone Zone exclusive Soil that has been bespoke blended with one main purpose in mind; urban tree planting. This has derived from Government schemes that are trying to encourage the introduction of more trees to built-up, urban areas.
Our Tree Sand is a 10mm screened soil, blended from selected local graded silica sands and organic compost. The sand allows tree pits to remain free-draining, whilst being able to maintain heavy footfall and vehicle movements without compacting. The added compost is what gives the tree roots the nutrients to develop well and grow strong.
We are proud to label our Wessex Dutch Tree Sand as part of our Sustainable range. Our Tree Sand is an eco-friendly soil for many reasons; due to the blended PAS 100 Compost and Silica Sand being sourced locally to Dorset, it means the carbon footprint is low, which creates less C02 due to less transportation.
The other factor that makes our Tree Soil environmentally, is the purpose for which it was created. This tree sand was created with Urban Tree Planting in mind; a sustainable Government incentive to add more trees to areas that produce a lot of Carbon Dioxide.
Alongside the Tree Sand, you will also find, within the Wessex® range, Farmyard Manure and 10mm Top Dressing.

A History of Wessex Tree Sand
Our Wessex® Dutch tree sand was exclusively used in Prince Charles’ Poundbury Project in Dorchester, which started back in 1993 and is still being constantly developed so it can be more eco-friendly. This was initially built in accordance with the principles of The Prince of Wales; created for sustainability and carbon neutrality.
Our Dutch Tree Sand has since been used around the UK in many other projects that involve businesses and councils requiring free-draining soil in areas that are prone to flash-flooding and also have a lot of traffic. These areas include car parks, subways and along busy streets.
The Growth of Urban Tree Planting
Urban areas across the UK are seeing more trees planted within built-up cities. Urban tree planting has been backed by the Government due to its many benefits.
It positively impacts climate change; providing shade in the Summer and helping to lower temperatures. It also helps to prevent floods in seasons of heavy rain, as the soil and the roots will absorb rain and prevent standing water which leads to floods.
Urban tree planting positively impacts air pollution; reducing airborne dust and smog by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide that would otherwise be breathed in by pedestrians.
On top of this, it also provides habitats for different animals; encouraging wildlife diversity in areas that might have once taken animal's habitats away.
Additionally, there is evidence to suggest that nature contributes to good mental well-being. People who would otherwise just have buildings and cars to look at will now be able to enjoy different varieties of trees as well as hear birds sing in the trees.
What is PAS 100 Compost?
Publicly Available Specification is a widely recognised compost quality standard within the organics recycling sector.
To ensure a high standard of compost, PAS is set by the British Standards Institution which requires producers to establish a top-quality production policy.
This product status is given in recognition of non-hazardous waste that contains biodegradable materials only, making it safe to use in both domestic and commercial settings.
The compost within our Tree Sand is PAS 100 Green Compost, ensuring the soil is of high quality for large areas.
What does BS3882 mean?
The British Standard 3882 certification for topsoil has been set out to ensure a consistently high performance grade; a standard set out by the British Standards Institute. This standard is the revised version of the 1994 originally set out.
BS3882 is measured on three components: Soil Structure and Classification, Free-from Contamination and Fertility. BS3882 topsoil suppliers are also able to provide results of the soil analysis which includes the origin of the soil, the contamination parameters and written confirmation that the soil complies with the standard BS3882:2007.
All of the Stone Zone & Landscaping Centre's soil contains BS3882 Soil for multi-purpose use, ideal for all gardening and landscaping applications.
