Wessex® Farmyard Manure
Our range of Wessex Soils and Composts are composed of high quality blends that have been created with specific planting requirements in mind. Some of these are locally produced while others, such as our Farmyard Manure, are produced in the South of the UK, so still have a low carbon footprint.
This Wessex Farmyard Manure, also referred to as "Spent Mushroom Compost" is an excellent mixture of organic materials such as well-rotted chicken and horse manure, that has been proven to add an abundance of nutrients to your existing soil.
We are proud to say this Manure Compost has been screened to eradicate any large pieces of debris such as sticks and stones. It is then dried and stored safely in our warehouse. This means the overall weight of the bulk bag is lighter when being delivered, again, creating less of an impact on its carbon footprint.
Improving your Garden Soil
The organic materials that are found within our top quality Farmyard Manure are used as a soil conditioner which helps to improve the soil structure by adding humus and nutrients.
Many people ask what 'Humus' means when it comes to soil quality; Humus refers to the remains once organic litter from plants and animals have decomposed. By introducing humus to clay soils in particular, it discourages the small particles from sticking together so tightly. Instead, they form larger clumps which creates larger spaces for more effective drainage, as well as the ability to hold air, which over time, will improve the soils texture.
Farmyard Manure for your Garden
Farmyard Manure has a variety of uses when it comes to your garden, an allotment or a commercially-planted space. With its high content of nutrients, it is proven to increase yields when it comes to growing anything from flowers to fruit and veg.
Planting Roses, Trees and Shrubs
Farmyard Manure Compost is great for plants that need neutral or more alkaline soils. This makes it great for roses and most trees and shrubs. Simply add one part of our Wessex Manure to two parts of 10mm Screened Soil, to then plant any of these varieties in a bed or border.
Soil Conditioning
The nature of Organic Farmyard Manure means that it breaks down very easily and quickly within your soil, so the nutrients start working their way through your soil really quick. If you've already got plants in your garden that are lacking blooms, try adding this Manure at 5-8cm deep over the top of your soil.
Growing Fruit and Vegetables
It's best to use Farmyard Manure within your vegetable beds either in the Spring or Autumn. When incorporating this to new beds, add a generous amount of Manure to the base of the trench and mix in with your soil. This will give your vegetables the best start to healthy growth.
Mulching
Just as you would use a Woodland Mulch, apply this Manure Compost to herbaceous and shrub borders at times when we're expecting extreme weather such as heat or frost. Simply spread this between plants at around a depth of 5 - 8cm; this will protect your soil over Summer and Winter by retaining moisture, as well as supressing weed growth.
Laying a Lawn
Lastly, Farmyard Manure is great for laying new lawns; it will improve the soil structure and give your grass the best start for establishment. Mix this Manure in at a depth of 5-8cm over the top of your existing soil, ready to plant your grass seed or lay your Turf Rolls.
