Due to this Basalt Chipping being angular in shape, it makes for the perfect stone to lay on your driveway. Due to the shapes of these garden chippings, it means they are able to 'lock' into each other, and create a very stable and sturdy base for heavy vehicles. People tend to opt for either garden gravel, shingle or chippings for their driveway for a few different reasons; one being that it is a low-cost option, in comparison to other driveway solutions such as Block Paving or Resin Bound Aggregates. The other reason is that it is very low maintenance over the long term; with the only up-keep involved being topping up the driveway chippings a few times a year. Thirdly, it is also very easy to lay chippings down as a driveway; most experienced DIYers can do this themselves as opposed to hiring a professional Landscaper. With Black Basalt Chippings being as versatile and popular as they are, these also work really well as a garden feature. One well-loved use for decorative garden chippings is to have them as a garden border. Whether you want an eye-catching border around some Artificial Grass or Garden Paving, Black Basalt really sets off the colours and enhances your overall garden. Another good use of Black Basalt Chippings is to use them as their own, separate garden feature. You could make a small rockery feature in your garden as a nice focal point to look at, or you could add it to a water feature or a pond! These angular, garden chippings are fish-friendly, so completely safe to use in a pond with animals. If you're thinking of adding Black Basalt to your driveway, you'll be pleased to know it's a straightforward task that can be carried out by most garden lovers! Read our how-to guide below for some tips. To ensure you have a sturdy driveway, you'll need a stable base; we recommend using Limestone Type 1, also known as MOT Type 1, which is a graded, 40mm Limestone. Next, measure the driveway area using a tape measure, you can then use our Quantity Calculator to work out how much Type 1 and Black Basalt you'll need. We would suggest having a base of 50mm. Dig out the desired area with a depth between 50mm - 150mm, ensuring this includes 50mm for your MOT Type 1 base and 50mm for your Shingle. We would recommend using a Grid Stabiliser for large areas that will have heavy traffic driving over it fairly often. These are particularly good for long drives or private roads. Add your 40mm Limestone Type 1 to your dug-out area and ensure a minimum of 50mm is laid. Not only will this provide a durable base, but it will also aid drainage. To ensure you don't find pesky weeds coming through your drive, add a layer of Weed Fabric; these come in multiple sizes for you to choose from. Once the weed fabric has been laid, you can start putting your 20mm Black Basalt Chippings down! Remember to add this to at least a 50mm depth. PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally-sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
