How to Lay Black Basalt Chippings in Your Garden

If you have decided to go with Black Basalt Chippings as your chosen decorative stone, we highly suggest that you begin by making a sturdy and secure base; to do this, use Limestone Type 1, also referred to as MOT Type 1, which is a graded, 40mm Limestone, and then  lay it around 50mm depth. This step may not be necessary for all decorative features but is recommended for drives and pathways. 

The first thing to start with is measuring the area that you're placing the Black Basalt in, once that is completed, go ahead and use our Quantity Calculator that will work out how much base layer and garden gravel you'll need. 

If you are using the Black Basalt for creating borders or larger features, we also suggest you use Weed Fabric which ensures weeds won't get through from between the chippings, ensuring your garden border or garden feature still looks fresh and new for a long time to come! We supply them in various sizes so you have a range to choose from depending on how big of an area you need to cover.

The only maintenance that is required from you is to top up the area with the chippings once a year just to stabilise it, which will ensure your safety when driving or walking on it.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally-sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
