20mm Black Slate
Our 20mm Black Slate decorative stones are one of the most stylish and dramatic slate stones that we carry. If you are a fan of a monochromatic yet dramatic look for your outdoor space, then the Black Slate stones are the best option for you. Here at Stone Zone, we think our customers love the Black Slate due to the rich, black colour they turn when they are wet, and when paired with lighter-coloured stones, they add depth and structure to your garden.
The slate stones are made of slate, a material that is well known for being strong and durable; this means that you can be confident that your decorative stones will be long-lasting and won't need replacing any time soon. The makeup of the slate added with their 20mm size means that they are perfect for driveways and walkways. Their sharp edges mean the stocks can lock in with each other, creating a stable surface to walk and drive on.

20mm Black Slate for your Path or Driveway
You will have all your friends and family impressed because of the sleek and modern Black Slate laid in your garden. If you are looking to design a garden or driveway that packs a punch but doesn't require too much effort and gives you a lot of leeways to play around with, these Slate stones are a great option. Keep in mind that alongside the 20mm Black Slate, we supply an endless range of colourful decorative stones so you can create any design you can dream up.
The Black Slate stones are also a more economical way to rejuvenate your drive or walkway and create an attractive outdoor area without becoming a financial burden. As a result of these 20mm stones being inexpensive, they are a good choice if you want to lay them on large expanses of land. A further bonus is that these stones are very easy to maintain so once they have been placed, you don't need to do much to them.
As we have stated earlier, the 20mm Slate stones are a reliable option for your driveway because of their shape and size. This means that they're sharper and angular sides lock together creating a stable surface, therefore making them safe for foot traffic and vehicular traffic without damaging the stones.
20mm Black Slate for your Garden
Decorative stones are often the last feature that is added to really make your garden complete. The 20mm Black Slate is versatile enough that it will elevate any area they are placed in. A few garden designs that include the Black Slate could include features such as Porcelain Paving, Natural Stone Paving, Turf Grass or even Artificial Grass. The Black Slate in 20mm would also be a great addition to your garden border if you want to really outline and highlight the landscape. The best thing about these black stones is that they will pretty much go well with any colour.
The 20mm Black Slate decorative stones will additionally allow you to create attractive feature areas in your garden. If there is a garden feature already present in your garden, rather than replacing it, you can always elevate and improve the feature area with Black Slate stones that will make it look as good as new and save you money at the same time. These stones will also be a good option if you want to bulk up a rockery feature or decorate around a pond or water feature to enhance the surrounding space. As we have mentioned earlier, when wet, these stones become darker and glossier making your garden features look even fancier and special. However, keep in mind that the 20mm Black Slate is not fish-friendly and therefore you CANNOT add these if you have a fishpond as it will be poisonous to the fish.

How to Lay 20mm Black Slate in Your Garden
If you are thinking about purchasing 20mm Blue Slate stones to decorate and enhance your garden, or to add some pizzazz to your current garden features, we have created a guide, specially created to give you an idea of what this project entails. But you need not worry, this is a great project if you are new to DIY-ing.
The method often followed by professional landscapers and experienced DIYers is to create a sturdy sub-base for your stones to lie on using Limestone Type 1, which is also referred to as MOT Type 1. MOT Type 1 is a graded, 40mm Limestone. We utilise this material because it works as a durable cushioning for your stones to be laid on and helps with stabilising the area you're placing stones on.
Step one is to go out and inspect your garden and space carefully, find the area where you want your feature to be and measure out the area. You can then visit our website and use our Quantity Calculator, which will work out how much base material and Black Slate you will need to cover the chosen area. We strongly advise having a base that will cover 50mm in depth.
Step two, once you have confirmed how much material you will need, is to start digging. It's best to dig deep enough to have the correct depth of space for 50mm worth of the Limestone and 50mm worth of the Black Slate.
Step three, once you have dug out the required amount, go ahead and add the Limestone to the dug-out area, and again ensure that there's enough to fill up 50mm in depth. The addition of the Limestone ensures that your feature area is stable and has a functioning drainage system.
Even though this isn't a mandatory step, we think it would be better for your garden overall if we add a layer of Weed Fabric underneath the feature area. The last thing you want is for your brand new feature to be marred by ugly weeds, so to prevent such a thing from occurring and to keep your garden looking pristine, we suggest you purchase strong Weed Fabric, which will prevent the growth and spread of weeds throughout your feature. At Stone Zone, we stock a wide range of Weed Fabric in different sizes so you can go with the one that fits your garden the best.
And finally, once the fabric has been laid, you can lay out your 20mm Black Slate. Again, please remember to add enough garden stones to fill a 50mm depth area.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
