The 6mm Shingle is far too small to be safely used on a driveway or pathway, even though they are in an angular shape, they are too small to lock together to create a safe surface for cars or pedestrians to use. However, this does not mean that you can't use the 6mm Shingle in a range of other ways. If you are looking for an affordable and easy way to decorate your garden and to add something a little extra, then the 6mm Shingle is the one for you. A far more cost-effective option than some of our Decorative Garden Stones, the 6mm Shingle can be a great way to add to a rockery feature in your front and back garden. They will also work well if you want to decorate any garden features that you already possess, for example, these shingles, along with some rockery would look excellent surrounding a pond or a manufactured water feature. Furthermore, these garden stones will also work well if you just want to create feature areas, used alongside other rockery, they would make excellent decoration pieces to fill up empty spots. A further design idea is that you can use them to create divisions within your garden: the 6mm shingle can be laid within any surface, be it paving, fresh lawn or even artificial, therefore it'll be a breeze to use them as borders that are not only functional but also pleasant to the eyes. The 6mm Shingle also aids with retaining moisture for plants, keeping them hydrated when the weather is warm, and on the other hand, they are able to keep the insulation in during the colder months. Installing a Shingle is a straightforward project and can be simply completed if you have prior DIY experience and are looking for an easy job to get stuck into. If you want to get stuck in, then carefully read through a guide that we created to help give you an idea of what to expect. To create a driveway that has longevity and is secure to use, you will need to start with an appropriate base, to get a good quality base in, we strongly advise using Limestone Type 1, also referred to as MOT Type 1, which is a graded, 40mm Limestone. Before properly starting the project, get yourself a measuring tape and measure out the area where you want your Shingle to be laid. Once you have done so, go ahead and visit our website where you will find a quality calculator, if you put in the measurements, it will figure out how much of the base material and 6mm Shingle you will need to complete your project. Now you can start the project by digging out the area you want the shingle to go in. We suggest that you dig through enough to have between 50-150mm depth, and make extra sure that the area you dug includes enough space for the 50mm MOT Type 1 base and 50mm for the Shingle. Although this step is not vital, it will help create a better quality driveway: If you want to, you can also add a Grid Stabiliser, which comes in handy if your driveway gets a lot of vehicular and foot traffic. Long drives and private roads especially benefit from these. Now proceed by adding 40mm Limestone Type 1 to the area you have dug out and as mentioned above, make sure to add enough to cover 50mm in depth, at a minimum. This will ensure that your driveway is durable and stable. We also suggest that you also lay down a layer of Weed Fabric to protect your garden from unwanted weeds springing up through the shingle. We stock weed fabric in a large range of sizes so you can choose the one that is most appropriate for your garden. And finally, once you have securely laid the base layer, the stabiliser and the fabric, you can start dropping in your 6mm Shing to the area. To repeat, please make sure that you add enough shingles to cover 50mm in depth for a safe and effective driveway. PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally-sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour. Read More...
