The 20mm Shingle is an ideal stone size for driveways, perfect for topping up an existing shingle base or creating a new one altogether. This gravel is particularly popular for driveways because its angular stones naturally interlock, forming a stable surface that can easily support parked cars. Shingle driveways offer a budget-friendly alternative to options like block paving or decorative chippings. Additionally, shingle’s loose, permeable nature provides excellent drainage, reducing the risk of standing water and flooding compared to solid paving. Beyond practicality, 20mm Shingle adds curb appeal with its natural mix of colors, offering a warm and attractive look for the front of any home. Maintenance is minimal, with only the occasional top-up needed to maintain a safe depth for parking. In addition to driveways, 20mm Shingle is a versatile and cost-effective choice for various garden projects. For example, it’s ideal for creating pathways, as its interlocking stones form a stable surface that’s easy to walk on, similar to its driveway application. This decorative stone also makes a beautiful border, adding color and texture to garden edges. You can even scatter it around certain plants, enhancing your plant displays with a natural, decorative touch. When used on top of plant beds, 20mm Shingle helps retain soil moisture in the summer and provides insulation in the winter, supporting plant health year-round. With its low maintenance and functional benefits, 20mm Shingle is an attractive and practical choice for enhancing any garden area. Creating a 20mm Shingle driveway is a manageable project for an experienced DIYer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started: For a sturdy base, use Limestone Type 1 (also known as MOT Type 1). This graded, 40mm limestone helps provide a solid foundation and enhances drainage. Start by measuring your driveway area, and use a quantity calculator to determine the amount of Type 1 needed. Plan for a base of about 50mm. Dig out the area to a depth of 50mm to 150mm, accounting for both the Type 1 base (50mm) and the Shingle layer (50mm). For driveways exposed to frequent or heavy traffic, consider installing a grid stabiliser. This addition is particularly helpful for long driveways or private roads, adding further stability. Spread your 40mm Limestone Type 1 to a minimum depth of 50mm, which will form a durable, drainable base for your driveway. Adding a weed membrane will help prevent unwanted plant growth from penetrating the surface. Choose the size that fits your space and lay it out over the limestone base. Spread the 20mm Shingle evenly over the weed fabric to a depth of at least 50mm. This will ensure adequate coverage and stability for parked vehicles. Note: Since decorative stones are naturally sourced, expect slight color variations from batch to batch. If the stones appear dusty, simply rinse them with water to reveal their true color.
