Creating a 20mm Shingle driveway is a manageable project for an experienced DIYer. Here’s a step-by-step guide to get you started:

Step 1: Prepare the Base

For a sturdy base, use Limestone Type 1 (also known as MOT Type 1). This graded, 40mm limestone helps provide a solid foundation and enhances drainage. Start by measuring your driveway area, and use a quantity calculator to determine the amount of Type 1 needed. Plan for a base of about 50mm.

Step 2: Excavate

Dig out the area to a depth of 50mm to 150mm, accounting for both the Type 1 base (50mm) and the Shingle layer (50mm).

Step 3: Optional Grid Stabiliser

For driveways exposed to frequent or heavy traffic, consider installing a grid stabiliser. This addition is particularly helpful for long driveways or private roads, adding further stability.

Step 4: Lay the Limestone Base

Spread your 40mm Limestone Type 1 to a minimum depth of 50mm, which will form a durable, drainable base for your driveway.

Step 5: Install Weed Fabric

Adding a weed membrane will help prevent unwanted plant growth from penetrating the surface. Choose the size that fits your space and lay it out over the limestone base.

Step 6: Apply 20mm Shingle

Spread the 20mm Shingle evenly over the weed fabric to a depth of at least 50mm. This will ensure adequate coverage and stability for parked vehicles.

Note: Since decorative stones are naturally sourced, expect slight color variations from batch to batch. If the stones appear dusty, simply rinse them with water to reveal their true color.
