Shingle 10mm for Feature Areas
The 10mm Shingle size is not ideal for driveways, as its smaller size makes it less stable. For driveways and walkways, we recommend using 14mm Shingle or larger, as these sizes interlock more effectively, creating a secure and durable surface for both walking and driving. The larger size provides better stability, making it a more practical choice for high-traffic areas.
While Shingle is often used for driveways, it also works beautifully in garden settings. The 10mm Shingle is an affordable way to create charming pathways within your garden or around your home. Like with driveways, these small stones lock together to form a stable, durable surface that’s perfect for foot traffic. Additionally, Shingle is an excellent choice for adding vibrant borders to your garden. Rather than a plain edge, you can use Shingle to introduce color and texture, drawing attention to specific areas. It’s also ideal for creating unique plant displays, adding visual interest and decoration to your landscape. Beyond aesthetics, 10mm Shingle provides practical benefits for garden plants by helping to retain moisture during warmer months and offering insulation in winter, making it a versatile, year-round choice for garden pathways, borders, and displays. Laying 10mm Shingle for a driveway or garden path is a straightforward DIY project, perfect for those eager to take on a hands-on project. Follow this guide to get started. Begin by measuring the area where you plan to lay the Shingle. For an accurate calculation of the materials, use our Quantity Calculator to determine how much MOT Type 1 Limestone (also known as Type 1 or 40mm Limestone) you'll need for a sturdy base. We recommend a 50mm base for optimal durability. Excavate the area to a depth of 50-150mm, ensuring you account for a 50mm layer each for both the base and the Shingle. This depth will create a solid, stable foundation. For areas with frequent foot or vehicle traffic, consider adding a Grid Stabiliser. This is especially useful for longer driveways and private roads, providing extra stability. Spread the 40mm MOT Type 1 Limestone across the excavated area, ensuring at least a 50mm thickness. This will help with drainage and provide a firm foundation for the Shingle. To keep weeds from sprouting through your Shingle layer, add a Weed Fabric layer over the Limestone. We offer a variety of sizes to match any garden project. Finally, pour your 10mm Shingle over the prepared area, covering to a depth of at least 50mm. Spread it evenly to create a smooth, polished finish. Note: Since our Decorative Stones are a naturally-sourced product, expect some variation in color from batch to batch. Sometimes, stones may arrive with dust from transit; a quick rinse with a hose will reveal their true colors. With these steps, you’ll achieve a beautiful and durable stone surface for your driveway or garden area.
