How to Create a Garden Pond
There have recently been a growing number of people who wish to have a pond in their garden. There is a large variety of garden ponds you can have within your garden; for a more contemporary and sleek look, you can install one surrounded by some garden paving. Or for something more rustic and heavy on nature you could dedicate a small portion of your garden to the wildlife; a garden pond is perfect for this as animals are always attracted to bodies of water for drinking. If you want to create your own garden pond, read our how-to guide below for the best tips and tricks!
1. Before you start creating your pond, you must first decide where it will be placed. If you are able to, we recommend you avoid areas covered by trees as that will lead to leaves falling into your pond that you will have to clean up. Additionally, we would also suggest that you choose an area that is fairly shaded as that will ensure the water temperature stays unaltered.
2. Once you have decided where your pond will go, the second thing to decide is how big the pond will be, and where it would be acquired from. If you are thinking about keeping your pond on the surface level, you can get yourself a mini pond or a large waterproof container from your local garden centre. For a ground-level pond, you will need to place the container where you want and spray paint around it so you have the exact outline. On the other hand, if you want a raised/elevated pond, you have two options, One would be to Sleepers lined with geo-fabric or if you happen to have an old bathtub or thinking of replacing your current one, you can upcycle it for this project.
3. For a ground-level pond, dig out the desired area to the correct depth - this is where the spray paint will come in handy. You can use Scalpings to fill in any gaps after you've added your pond.
4. Once that is complete, you can finally start adding your water! For some extra oomph, you may want to consider buying a plug-in or solar-powered water pump to create a professional-looking water feature; and if you want to go the whole hog you can also add in a mini waterfall, which would be perfect as a garden feature
5. Now you can start doing the fun part, decoration time! To create a natural-looking pond that will go seamlessly with your garden, consider Plum Cobbles and Chippings alongside the Paddlestones to add more variety and texture to your pond. You can also purchase some aquatic plants that you can add in for more greenery.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their actual colour.
