Washed Plastering Sand
Washed Plastering Sand makes up part of our 'Trade Range' at the Stone Zone; a great value range that is consistently high quality for all your Builders Merchants needs in Dorset. We have many other Builder's Aggregates available to buy online.
What makes Washed Plastering Sand, also known as Rendering Sand, so unique is that it is course sand that is fairly gritty in consistency, although the particles are not quite as large as Sharp Sand. For this reason, it makes it the perfect material to mix with cement for both internal and external rendering applications.
As the name suggests, this Rendering Sand has been washed; which essentially removes the dust, silt and clay; leaving only the pure, coarse sand desired by Builders. It then undergoes a screening process at a local site in the South of England; thus removing any debris and larger, unwanted stones. This also ensures the particle size is right for the required application.

When it comes to exterior plastering applications, Builders generally tend to prefer using Washed Plastering Sand due to the make-up of this material. Soft Building Sand is too fine for such applications, and over time can cause cracks in the drying process; in contrast to this, Washed Grit it too coarse and 'gritty' and is better for laying bricks and slabs as opposed to plastering. When using Washed Rendering Sand for interior plastering applications, many people tend to mix this with cement and even lime at a 6:1:1 ratio. The added lime create a creaminess to the overall texture of the mixture and also provides some elasticity, making the mixture easier to work with. At Stone Zone, we supply many different ranges of Sands that can be used for a wide selection of building and landscaping applications. With sand being a naturally-occurring substance that originates from rocks which have eroded over the years, it can come in many different variations. To be identified as 'sand,' the particle sizes must vary between 0.6mm and 2mm. For the reasons above, sand is a precious material that, although we are so used to there being so much of, there will come a time where there isn't enough, and we will have to discover an alternative material to use. When it comes to using sand for various applications such as building and landscaping, it must meet certain criteria and therefore, at minimum, will usually go through a screening process to ensure the sand is free from debris and is free from contamination. Washed Plastering Sand, also known as Rendering Sand, goes through a process where it is washed; this process removes silt, clay and dust from the sand particles, only leaving the sand. By nature, it is very coarse sand which makes it great for binding to form a tough and solid surface, therefore making a plastering mix well due to the nature of the grains. Washed Grit is also a very similar alternative to Plastering Sand, the only difference being that the particles can be larger and jagged in shape. Builder's Sand, also known as Brick Sand, is normally available in two different colours; Yellow, which is known as 'Blonde Building Sand,' and orange, hence 'Orange Building Sand.' Builders Sand is commonly used for jointing natural stone paving and bricklaying applications such as building houses using common house bricks as well as exterior walls that may be made from Sandstone Walling. As a large Builders Merchant in Dorset, we also supply children-friendly sand such as Silver Play Sand and great-value, high quality Bunker Sand that is certified for commercial use and has been supplied to golf courses across the UK. PLEASE NOTE: While every effort has been made to ensure our soils and sands are free from contamination; there is always the chance that there may be small pieces of debris present. Please ensure you handle the sand with care when using it. Sample Soil is available in-store, please ask a customer advisor.
