Sunset Red Chippings for Your Garden

The most popular use of Sunset Red Chippings is as a striking garden feature. If you've got a traditional brick red house, the warm colours of Sunset Red will go perfectly with your property. 

A common garden feature is a border around either Garden Paving, Decking or Turf Grass. Borders look great and are a nice way to separate your garden features from each other. The warm hues of Sunset Red Chippings look especially nice against a brown fence. 

You could also use Sunset Red Chippings as a focal point in the garden; maybe you have a water feature or a statue that stands proud in the middle of the garden, why not add some decorative chippings around this to draw people's attention to it? Equally, it could also be used in an area that simply needs covering in a low maintenance way; perhaps an area around a shed or your front garden could really benefit from some colour. 

The colours of Sunset Red are at their best when submerged in water; the peach and red tones really stand out. For this reason, you may want to add them to a water feature. We would not recommend adding them to a pond, however, as they are not fish-friendly. 

How to Lay Sunset Red Chippings

You might be able to lay Sunset Red Chippings if you're confident in your DIY skills! It doesn't necessarily need a professional to complete, so can be a very low cost project. Read our basic guide for the best tips below. 

The first step to do is to measure out the area that you'd like your Sunset Red Chippings to go. Once you've done this, you can use our quantity calculator to work out how many maxi bags or bulk bags you need.

As a rule of thumb, and especially if you're laying Sunset Red Chippings as a drive or a pathway, we would suggest laying a base layer 50mm deep. The best base layer would either be Scalpings or Type 1 Limestone. These crunch down to form a very sturdy yet cushioned base for your decorative chippings to then go on. 

Ensure you dig out an area that allows at least 50mm for your base layer, and then a further 50mm for your decorative stone to go on. You might need a wacker plate to completely crush the base layer down. It's also good practice to use a spirit level to ensure a level area.

There is an optional step where you can place weed membrane on top of your base layer. This is popular as it will ensure you don't get any pesky weeds come through your lovely decorative area.

Finally, fill your base layer with Type 1 or Scalpings, and then your decorative stone can go on top. By adding the base layer, it will also ensure drainage is still good. To create a completely stable base, take a look at our CORE Handy Grid.

On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
