40mm Scalpings as a Sub-Base

When it comes to laying driveways, paths, patios and even Artificial Grass, 40mm Scalpings are one of the most popular materials to use as a sub-base.

Once you've settled on a base layer for your Block Paving or larger Paving Slabs, Scalpings are a great material to use to fill in any gaps or to create a softer layer for your Paving to be laid on. Some Landscapers mix these Scalpings with Crushed Concrete or use it as an alternative to Type 1 Limestone.

It's also a great material to use when you're laying Artificial Grass. This can act as a levelling material if you're trying to achieve a flat surface for your grass, as well as providing a 'springy' surface which feels comfortable underfoot. Weed Membranes can then be easily placed on top to avoid any unwanted weeds on your turf. 

40mm Scalps as a Building Foundation

When mixed with various other building materials, Scalpings also make a great foundation for buildings. We have supplied 40mm Scalpings to many large building sites that have chosen to use this material to level out foundations and fill in any gaps. 

40mm Scalpings are also popular in the building industry as they are a cost-effective alternative to Limestone Type 1. The clay consistency of 40mm Scalpings is what makes it such a nice product to work with, as you can literally mould the scalpings into place, thus filling any unwanted gaps or levelling out as a sub-base.

What are Scalpings?

We supply many different building aggregates and landscaping products such as sand and soil which must undergo a screening process to ensure they aren't contaminated by any unwanted debris such as stones, glass and sticks. 

The 40mm Scalps that we stock, are essentially the 'contaminated' stones that have been separated in the screening process. Although this doesn't make them sound very appealing, all they are contaminated with is clay, so is still perfectly safe to use on applications such as sub-bases and levelling foundations. 

Once the Limestone Scalpings have been separated as the 'waste product' from other screened materials, they then go through what looks like a large sieve itself, to ensure the stones within the product aren't any larger than 40mm. We call our Scalpings a graded 40mm, as there will be much smaller stone particles that go down to dust. 

PLEASE NOTE: While every effort has been made to ensure our landscaping and building materials are free from contamination; there is always the chance that there may be small pieces of debris present. Please ensure you handle the sand with care when using it.
