What is the Difference Between Porcelain and Sandstone?
Porcelain and Sandstone Paving each bring distinct qualities to outdoor spaces, catering to different styles and functional needs.
Porcelain Paving is a manufactured material designed to replicate the look of natural stone while offering enhanced durability. Created through a process called vitrification, these slabs are made from high-quality clays and minerals, including quartz, and fired at 1200 degrees Celsius. This process ensures an extremely durable, low-absorption surface often described as “glass-like.” Vitrified porcelain is non-porous and waterproof, with excellent resistance to mold, moss, and frost. It maintains an R11 skid rating, making it a safe choice for pool areas or spaces where children play.
In contrast, Sandstone is a naturally formed stone sourced from quarries, primarily in India. Sandstone’s porous nature allows water to pass through, which can make it a more environmentally friendly choice by aiding rainwater absorption and potentially helping with flood prevention.
Porcelain Paving is low-maintenance, with a durable surface that resists wear, ensuring colors remain vivid over time. Meanwhile, Sandstone requires regular sealing to preserve its colors and resist weathering. Over time, however, Sandstone’s hues naturally fade to lighter tones, developing a classic, aged look that appeals to those who prefer a vintage aesthetic.
Both options offer unique benefits, with Porcelain excelling in durability and ease of care, and Sandstone bringing natural character and environmental benefits.
How to Install Sienna™ Everest Pearl Tiles
Installing outdoor porcelain paving requires careful planning and attention to detail for a durable, attractive finish. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve a successful result:
Plan and Design
Measure the Area: Start by measuring your space, factoring in any specific patterns or borders you want to include.
Choose Your Pavers: Select porcelain pavers that fit both your aesthetic and practical needs, considering the color, size, and thickness.
Prepare the Site
Mark the Layout: Use stakes and string to outline your design, keeping lines straight and corners accurate.
Excavate the Ground: Dig down 150-200mm (6-8 inches) to allow room for the sub-base, bedding layer, and pavers, ensuring a slight slope away from structures to aid drainage.
Create a Stable Sub-Base
Lay the Sub-Base: Spread 100-150mm (4-6 inches) of MOT Type 1 crushed stone or hardcore over the area.
Compact the Sub-Base: Use a plate compactor to create a firm, even foundation that minimizes movement over time.
Prepare the Bedding Layer
Mix Mortar: Make a semi-dry mortar using a 4:1 ratio of sharp sand to cement.
Apply Mortar: Spread the mortar mix evenly over the compacted sub-base to a depth of about 30mm (1-1.5 inches), ensuring it follows the same slope for effective drainage.
Prime the Porcelain Pavers
Apply Slurry Primer: Before laying each paver, coat the back with a slurry primer like Azpects EASYPrime to ensure strong adhesion to the mortar bed.
Lay the Porcelain Pavers
Position the Pavers: Start laying from one corner, pressing each paver firmly into the mortar.
Use Spacers: Keep a 3-5mm gap between pavers to allow for jointing material.
Level Each Paver: Use a spirit level to ensure alignment, making any needed adjustments with a rubber mallet.
Cutting Pavers (if necessary)
Cut with Precision: For a clean cut, use a wet tile saw with a diamond blade. Always wear safety goggles and gloves during cutting.
Jointing the Paving
Fill the Joints: After the mortar has set (typically after 24 hours), fill gaps with a jointing compound like EASYJoint, following the manufacturer’s directions.
Activate the Compound: If required, activate with water to fully secure the joints.
Final Finishing
Clean the Surface: Use a soft brush and water to remove any excess jointing compound from the pavers.
Allow to Set: Let the paving cure for 24-48 hours before introducing foot traffic or adding heavy furniture.
Optional: Sealing
Consider Sealing the Joints: While porcelain is naturally non-porous, sealing the joints can add extra protection against stains. Be sure the jointing compound is fully cured before applying any sealant.
Maintenance Tips
Routine Cleaning: Regularly sweep and occasionally rinse with a hose or pressure washer to keep the surface fresh.
Avoid Harsh Cleaners: Stick to mild detergents and avoid abrasive products to preserve the look and integrity of the pavers and joints.
Following these steps will ensure a high-quality porcelain paving installation that remains beautiful and resilient for years to come.
