Morales Grey Outdoor Porcelain Slabs
Grey tones are a popular choice for garden patios, offering a versatile, sophisticated look that complements a wide range of color schemes. These mid-grey Porcelain Slabs are designed to endure both frost and heat, making them well-suited for England’s unpredictable weather.
One of their standout features is their impermeability, which prevents water absorption. This makes spills easy to clean and helps protect against stains, making these slabs perfect for high-moisture areas or spaces with heavy foot traffic.
In addition, these slabs pair beautifully with garden elements like natural grass, artificial turf, and decorative stones, allowing you to create a cohesive, stylish outdoor setting. Their resistance to grime, mold, and stains also makes them ideal for family homes with pets or gardens surrounded by trees, ensuring easy maintenance.
With an R10 slip-resistance rating, these slabs provide a secure surface even when wet, making them a safe and practical choice for areas like swimming pools or rainy-season patios.
How to Install Murales Grey Porcelain Tiles
Installing outdoor porcelain paving requires careful planning and attention to detail to ensure a durable and visually appealing result. Follow this step-by-step guide for a successful installation:
1. Plan and Design
- Measure the Area: Begin by measuring the installation space, considering any specific patterns or borders you want to incorporate.
- Choose Your Pavers: Select porcelain pavers based on your desired aesthetic and practical needs, keeping in mind the size, color, and thickness of the slabs.
2. Prepare the Site
- Mark the Layout: Outline the area using stakes and string to ensure straight lines and accuracy in your design.
- Excavate the Ground: Dig down 150-200mm (6-8 inches) to accommodate the sub-base, bedding layer, and pavers. Ensure a slight slope for water drainage, directing water away from buildings.
3. Create a Sub-Base
- Lay the Sub-Base: Spread a 100-150mm (4-6 inches) layer of MOT Type 1 crushed stone or hardcore across the excavated area.
- Compact the Sub-Base: Use a plate compactor to create a firm, level foundation for the paving, ensuring stability and preventing future movement.
4. Prepare the Bedding Layer
- Mix Mortar: Create a semi-dry mortar mix with a 4:1 ratio of sharp sand to cement.
- Apply Mortar: Spread the mortar mix evenly over the compacted sub-base to a depth of about 30mm (1-1.5 inches), maintaining the slope for drainage.
5. Apply Primer to Porcelain Pavers
- Slurry Primer: Coat the back of each paver with a slurry primer to improve adhesion between the smooth porcelain surface and the mortar bed. Use a product like Azpects EASYPrime for optimal results.
6. Lay the Porcelain Pavers
- Place the Pavers: Begin laying the pavers from one corner, pressing each slab into the mortar bed.
- Use Spacers: Maintain a 3-5mm gap between the pavers to allow for jointing material.
- Check for Level: Ensure that each paver is level with its neighbors using a spirit level, and adjust as necessary with a rubber mallet.
7. Cutting Porcelain Pavers (if needed)
- Cut with Precision: Use a wet tile saw equipped with a diamond blade to cut porcelain pavers cleanly. Always wear protective gear, such as gloves and safety goggles, during this step.
8. Jointing the Paving
- Fill the Joints: After the mortar has set for 24 hours, fill the gaps between the pavers using a jointing compound like EASYJoint. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure complete and even filling of the joints.
- Activate the Compound: Some jointing compounds require water activation—apply water as directed to finish the jointing process.
9. Final Finishing
- Clean the Surface: Once the jointing compound is in place, clean the surface of the pavers with a soft brush and water to remove any excess material.
- Allow to Set: Let the paving cure for 24-48 hours before allowing foot traffic or placing heavy items on it.
10. Optional: Sealing
- Consider Sealing: While porcelain is naturally non-porous, sealing the joints can offer added protection from dirt and stains. Ensure the jointing compound is fully cured before applying a sealer.
11. Maintenance Tips
- Regular Cleaning: Sweep regularly and occasionally wash the surface with a garden hose or pressure washer to keep your porcelain paving in top condition.
- Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Clean with mild detergents and avoid abrasive products that could damage the surface or jointing.
By following this methodical approach, you'll ensure a professional-quality porcelain paving installation that enhances your outdoor space for many years to come.
