Morales Dark Outdoor Porcelain Slabs
Dark is a popular choice for garden patios due to its deeper tone, which seamlessly blends with various color schemes, offering great design flexibility. These Charcoal Porcelain Slabs are built to withstand both frost and high temperatures, making them an excellent option for England’s unpredictable weather.
A key benefit of these slabs is their impermeability, meaning they resist water absorption. This ensures spills can be wiped away easily without leaving stains, making them perfect for high-moisture areas or spaces with frequent use.
Additionally, these slabs enhance various garden features, from natural turf and artificial grass to decorative stones, helping to create a cohesive, well-designed outdoor environment. They are also grime, mold, and stain-resistant, making them ideal for family homes with pets or gardens surrounded by trees—keeping your patio clean is effortless.
Lastly, the slabs have an R10 slip-resistance rating, offering a secure surface even in wet conditions, making them a safe choice near swimming pools or during rainy weather.
How to Install Murales Dark Porcelain Tiles
Installing outdoor porcelain paving requires careful planning and precision to ensure a long-lasting and attractive surface. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you achieve the best results:
Plan and Design
Measure the Area: Start by measuring the space where you’ll install the porcelain paving, considering any patterns, borders, or unique design elements.
Choose Your Pavers: Select porcelain pavers that fit your aesthetic and functional needs. Consider factors like size, thickness, and color to suit your outdoor space.
Prepare the Site
Mark the Layout: Use stakes and string to outline the area where you’ll lay the pavers. Ensure the lines are straight and the layout follows your intended design.
Excavate the Ground: Dig down to a depth of 150-200mm (6-8 inches), allowing space for the sub-base, bedding layer, and porcelain pavers. Ensure a slight slope for proper drainage, directing water away from buildings.
Create a Sub-Base
Lay the Sub-Base: Spread a layer of MOT Type 1 crushed stone or hardcore, about 100-150mm deep (4-6 inches).
Compact the Sub-Base: Use a plate compactor to ensure the sub-base is firm and level. This forms a stable foundation for your paving.
Prepare the Bedding Layer
Mix Mortar: Create a semi-dry mortar mix using a 4:1 ratio of sharp sand and cement.
Apply Mortar: Spread the mortar evenly over the compacted sub-base to a depth of about 30mm (1-1.5 inches), maintaining a slight slope for drainage.
Apply Primer to Porcelain Pavers
Slurry Primer: Before laying each paver, apply a slurry primer to the back. This ensures a strong bond between the smooth porcelain surface and the mortar. Products like Azpects EASYPrime are ideal for this step.
Lay the Porcelain Pavers
Place the Pavers: Start laying the pavers from one corner, pressing them gently into the mortar bed.
Use Spacers: Maintain a consistent 3-5mm gap between the pavers for jointing material.
Check for Level: Ensure each paver is level with the others using a spirit level, adjusting with a rubber mallet if necessary.
Cutting Porcelain Pavers (if needed)
Cut with Precision: Use a wet tile saw with a diamond blade specifically designed for cutting porcelain. Always wear protective gear when cutting.
Jointing the Paving
Fill the Joints: After the mortar has partially set (typically after 24 hours), fill the gaps between the pavers with a jointing compound like EASYJoint. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions, ensuring the joints are thoroughly filled.
Activate the Jointing Compound (if necessary): Some jointing compounds require water activation, so apply water as directed to finish the jointing process.
Final Finishing
Clean the Surface: Once the joints are filled, clean the surface with a soft brush and water to remove any excess compound.
Allow to Set: Let the paving cure for 24-48 hours before walking or placing heavy objects on it.
Sealing (Optional)
Consider Sealing: While porcelain is naturally non-porous, you may want to seal the joints for extra protection against dirt and stains. Ensure the jointing compound is fully cured before applying any sealer.
Maintenance Tips
Regular Cleaning: Sweep regularly and occasionally use a jet wash to keep your porcelain paving looking pristine.
Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Clean with mild detergents and avoid abrasive cleaners that could damage the pavers or jointing.
By following these steps, you'll have a durable and elegant porcelain paving installation that enhances your outdoor space for years to come.
