Dorset Gabion Stone
Consisting of a cream colour, our Dorset Gabion Stones are a great addition to any garden landscape wanting a garden feature that divides the garden up. These sandy, buff coloured garden stones measure around 100-200mm in size, but can be broken into smaller pieces by using a sledge hammer. This is a highly popular product with the Rockery & Boulders range.
Sourced locally in Dorset, these decorative Garden Stones have a low carbon footprint and are considered an eco-friendly addition for your garden in the South of the UK. Our Gabion stones are made out of Limestone; a natural stone that can be found all around the world. By nature, Limestone is soft and permeable, making it great for flood-prevention and retaining walls.
Gabion Limestone for Your Garden
There are many uses for Gabion stones, and they are becoming an increasingly popular product for use in the domestic garden. The most common use of Gabion Stones are usually to fill Gabion baskets. The creamy colour of Gabion Stone is highly versatile, therefore Gabion baskets can be used around the garden to make a decorative feature to match Garden Paving Slabs or contrast Artificial Grass.
Another popular use of Gabion baskets are also to create a bench in the garden. Gabion baskets are available to buy in a range of different sizes, so can be tailored to how big or low you want it. As Gabion stones are made of limestone, it means these natural stones require very little maintenance, and won't weather in the rain.
100-200mm Buff Gabion Stones for Commercial Use
On a more practical basis, you might have seen Gabion baskets being used around beaches and areas that have large lakes and rivers. This is because Gabion Limestone, by nature, is porous and absorbs and retains water very easily. By using Gabion Limestone around areas that are prone to flooding, it gives another surface for rain to land on and absorb into, preventing standing water on areas that aren't permeable, such as Porcelain Paving.
Cream Gabion Stones can also be used on a large scale around commercial, botanical gardens or other landscapes such as outdoor restaurant seating or public parks. They can be used to sit around rockery pools as a decorative feature or the gabion baskets can be used to separate one area from another. They look great paired with smaller sized stones of a matching colour, like Purbeck Chippings.

How to Add Gabion Stones to Your Garden
As mentioned earlier, Gabion Stones are more commonly used to fill Gabion Baksets. These baskets are made out of galvanised steel which are manufactured to a high specification for holding large and heavy garden rocks.
Gabion baskets are purchased dismantled so you can build it in your garden wall by wall. This means you can create a gabion basket completely to your specification; as deep or tall as you want it.
We recommend using support posts in larger gabion stone baskets to support the stability of your wall. We would also recommend placing your gabion stone basket on a sturdy base such as concrete slabs.
If you're using gabion baskets in your garden, you may want to opt for smaller baskets, especially if this is a DIY project that you're completing yourself. Smaller baskets are lighter and easier to manouver; simply use a wheelbarrow to transport the Gabion stone, and then lift each stone into the basket.
All Gabion baskets are completed with a steel, mesh lid which is easy to take off and put back on again as and when you need to. Due to the stability and durability of the Gabion baskets, they can withstand weight if you wanted to used these as benches.
Another use of Gabion stone is in an existing or new rockery pool. The cream/buff colours look very striking against any water features you have in your garden, and will add a beautiful, yet natural touch. Please be aware that these Gabion Limestones are not fish friendly though, so cannot be used in fish ponds.
By nature, Gabion stones are very heavy. We would recommend a trained professional installs these in your garden. Visit us in-store for recommended Landscapers in Poole, Bournemouth, Wimborne, Dorchester and Ringwood.
PLEASE NOTE: Due to our Decorative Stones being a naturally-sourced product, there will always be some variation from batch to batch, especially in terms of colour. On occasion, your garden stones may be very dusty; we recommend hosing your new stones down to wash them and reveal their true colour.
