Brown Tanalised Pine Sleepers for Raised Beds
A common use for Pine Sleepers is building raised plant beds, whether in your garden or on an allotment. Pine Sleepers are known for their ease of manoeuvrability, making them perfect for quick handcrafted projects in your garden. If precision is your aim, they can also be machine-cut.
Elevating your plants in raised beds reduces the risk of pests like slugs damaging them. It also makes maintenance more convenient, as you won't need a kneeling pad while weeding or digging.
Pine Sleepers for Garden Edging
One popular garden design involves adorning borders with flowers or using sleepers to divide different areas within the garden with garden edging.
Pine Sleepers are an excellent choice for ground-level flower borders. Their light brown hue adds to your garden's colour palette, making your flowers stand out. These flower beds are simple to assemble and can accommodate various plant types, including flowers, herbs, and shrubs. Consider using Wessex Soils for healthy growth or Woodland Mulch to enhance the edging's appearance.
Whether your garden is tiered or not, or you want to create divisions within your landscape, these Sleepers complement various landscaping options, including natural paving, porcelain paving, and even artificial grass. To enhance the area further, consider adding Chippings or Decorative Stones.
They can also serve as edging for outdoor pathways. If you plan to use Path Chippings in your walkways, Brown Pine Sleepers will harmonize beautifully, creating a rustic and classic look.
How to Create a Raised Sleeper Bed
Building your own raised sleeper bed is a straightforward DIY project, achievable by anyone with some DIY experience and the right materials and tools. The rectangular shape of our Sleepers makes them easy to work with, attaching them with Hex Head Timber Screws. Follow our comprehensive guide for helpful tips!
Recommended Equipment
- Spade
- Scissors
- Spirit Level
- Drill
- Sandpaper
- Exterior coach screws
- 10mm Flat Wood Drill Bit
- 32mm Flat Wood Drill Bit
- 17mm Socket and Ratchet
- Weed fabric
Start by placing your sleepers where you want the beds to be. Carefully select the location, considering factors like sunlight, especially if you plan to grow fruits and vegetables. Sunlight is essential for all plants and flowers.
Dig out the area using a spade, ensuring it's at least 30mm deep, and remove any debris. Use a spirit level to check for levelness.
We recommend using weed fabric at the bottom of the sleeper beds. This is the best time to install it, as you can measure and cut it to fit precisely.
For proper drainage, consider adding a porous aggregate on top of the weed membrane. Scalpings or Crushed Concrete are cost-effective options. A 10mm layer is sufficient to cover the weed fabric.
Place the sleepers back in their original position. Drill two pilot holes into the outer sleeper and the shorter sleeper using a 10mm flat wood drill bit. Then, use a 32mm drill bit to create recessed holes on top of the pilot holes. Insert 15cm coach screws into the holes and secure them with the 17mm socket and ratchet. Repeat this process for all four corners.
If you're stacking multiple sleepers, you can drill pilot holes in the top tiers that go into the sleepers below and secure them with coach screws, following the same method.
Finally, sand the corners and any other rough areas for a smooth and polished appearance. Ensure safety by wearing gloves, dust masks, and goggles to protect against debris.
