10mm LECA Soil
Another unique, bespoke-blended Stone Zone Soil; this interesting soil blend has been created with one main purpose in mind; Rooftop Planting. Particularly popular and a growing trend in built-up areas and larger cities, rooftop planting requires a very specific blend of soil; it needs to be very light in weight, as well as retaining a good structure and contain enough nutrients for the plants to thrive.
LECA stands for Light Expanded Clay Aggregates which provide the perfect balance of moisture, food and air. The space between the small pebbles allows oxygen to get to the roots, enhancing airflow to the roots.
Our Leca Soil is a lightweight, blended soil which is made up of screened, sandy loam soil, coconut husk coir, PAS 100 green compost and Leca 4-10mm.
This sandy loam soil is BS3882 compliant and is screened to 10mm. It provides good structure due to its blend of sand, silt and clay. The sand aids drainage while the silt and clay provide nutrients and hold moisture.
The coconut husk coir is a natural, organic material and is added to this unique soil blend due it its excellent water absorption and retention. This makes for a high success rate for germination.
PAS 100 green compost provides a slow release of nutrients while improving soil structure. It aids drainage and reduces soil compaction to ensure the soil stays lightweight.
Please note that this soil is not suitable for ericaceous plants that require acidic soil, this contains the following flowers: Rhododendrons, Azaleas, Camellias, Heathers, Pieris, Blueberry, Cassiope, Eucryphia, Enkianthus, Fothergilla, Gaultheria, Leucothoe, Nyassa, Kalmia, Pseudowintera, Styrax and Vaccinum.
10mm LECA Soil for Balconies
If you live in a flat but are lucky enough to have a small outdoor space that is a balcony, why not add some greenery? Gone are the days when people just looked at a plain balcony with railings around it; people are now starting to get really creative with the plants they can add to their balcony for a whole host of reasons!
For one thing, adding plants to your balcony adds a little more interest in colour; especially if you're planting a colourful array of flowers. Secondly, adding plants will hugely improve the air quality on your balcony. This is especially important if you live in a built-up city that has a lot of traffic creating unhealthy fumes.
Some people have planted things like Ivy, to watch it grow around their railings, while others have grown flowers in large tubs, and some people like to have hanging baskets so the flowers are at eye level.
10mm LECA Soil for Rooftop Gardens
We have proudly supplied this soil directly to many large sites that are in the process of building large rooftop gardens. Some of these customers have been large department stores that have added a rooftop garden for either customers or their staff members. Other customers include restaurants that want to make the most of this space and add it as an outdoor eating area.
This type of landscaping requires a professional, due to the importance of laying the base and ensuring the roof is stable and safe for people to walk on. Once you have prepared a safe and suitable base, the LECA soil can go directly on top and will be able to seed things like grass seed and non-ericaceous shrubs and flowers.
Many companies worry about planting turf and shrubs on their rooftop as they are worried about potential floods and water leaking through the roof. This is why it needs to be completed by a professional, and laid at the right gradient, ideally with a SUDS area. Using Artificial Grass usually worsens this potential problem as the water can sit there and increase the chances of flooding.
What is Rooftop Planting?
In a world where populations are increasing and spaces are getting smaller - rooftop gardens are becoming more popular. Whether a balcony or a rooftop, homeowners and employers are taking the opportunity to transform them into a peaceful, green paradise.
Regular potting soil or ground soil isn’t suitable for rooftop gardens as it is too heavy and dense. Therefore, We have created our special blend of Leca Soil; a perfect, lightweight growing medium for plants situated on rooftops.
