Why is Primer so Important for Paving Slabs?
Paving Primer is primarily used on Porcelain Paving tiles by Landscapers, with some using it on natural stone pavers such as Sandstone Paving and Limestone Paving, as well as Cobble Setts and Block Paving.
Our recommendation would always be to use Pro-prime Paving Primer on Porcelain Paving. This is because these paving slabs are man-made and therefore have smoother sides and typically less 'grip' than natural paving.
By priming your Porcelain Paving slabs before you lay them onto your mortar bed, you are giving them a bonding agent that will firmly bond the paving slabs to the mortar bed in a way that will stand the test of time throughout all weather conditions, as well as footfall on your garden patio.
If you don't use a Paving Primer on Porcelain Paving, over time you may experience some movement of your patio slabs, where they can essentially 'un-stick' from the mortar bed, which will cause problems down the line which will be hard to fix.

Step 1 - Preparation
Once you have prepared your mortar base - tips on Laying Paving Slabs can be found here - you should be ready to start priming your paving slabs. Ensure the patio slabs have been cleaned of any dust or debris by simply brushing down or washing with clean water. Ensure you have carried this out for your entire batch of paving slabs before you start priming.
Step 2 - Mixing
Pour 7 litres of clean water into a large container. Add UltraScape pro-prime powder slowly and mix for 3 to 5 minutes to create a smooth, lump-free slurry. Your Primer is now ready to use.
Step 3 - Priming
Start to apply your paving primer liberally by using a small paint brush and aim to coat the back of the paving slab with 1-2mm of the primer. Once you're happy that the entire surface area is coated with primer, immediately place your paving slab in place onto the prepared mortar bed. Repeat this process across your paving tiles.
Step 4 - Storage
If you have any of this powdered substance left, you can store this back in its tub, provided there is no water present. You can store this for up to 8 months in a cool, dry place.
We have many Paving Accessories within our large range of landscaping supplies, including Paving Jointing Grout, Paving Cleaner and Natural Stone Sealer.
